Samokhvalov wrote his picture at the end of the “thaw”, when the images of the revolution were intensively updated and the artists tried to bring them closer to the world of young contemporaries. At this time, romance and poetry came to the fore. In his memoirs, the artist wrote: “I have never been familiar with A. Blok, called Anna Akhmatova, “tragic tenor of the era,” appears in the interpretation of Samokhvalov as a genius of revolution, inspiring and encouraging her soldier. However, the then household experiences of the poet could very much differ from the experiences of poetic. Zinaida Hippius, another outstanding poet of the Silver Age, at the height of the campaign on housing “compaction” in her diary, sarcastically wrote: “Blok, they say, is even sick with the fear that the Red Army soldiers are instructed to him in the office.
